First oil change on 2005 Sportsman 400 - Questions!

any of the polaris quads with oil tank should be primed after changing. i know a lot of guys that don't and haven't had any problems. BUT, it takes about 30 sec's to do and doesn't cost you a thing. an oil pump that happens to loose its prime once will not be kind to your top end or wallet.

First oil change on 2005 Sportsman 400 - Questions!
I have experienced almost every thing mentioned here. I tried to remove the screen and heard a loud crack and nothing moved. Thought I broke the oil tank. I just left it alone after that.
My big problem is when I started the priming procedure; I pinched off the upper hose on the oil tank 2 inches down as the manual says. I started the engine and oil started shooting out of the slit about 1 inch from the engine (a lot of oil). I thought it was a simple broken hose and replaced it. Seems to run ok. I have no idea if the pump is primed or not. Any ideas would be great.

Very simple. Just reach up at the top of the tank, clamp the vent line close to the outlet nipple with small vice grips. Crank it up and run for a minute of so. Kill the engine ,release the clamps. May or may not hear a hiss of air,but the oil pump is primed. Not necessary to do this if you're just changing oil and filter.Priming only needed when you remove the oil screen from the tank for cleaning.
