Default lose belt

I just put a new belt on my 2002 sportsman 500ho and it is to lose. It engages to ruff. How do you take some slack out of the belt?

Thank You For Your Help

if its the right belt there shouldnt be any slack in it, unless the engine moved. the ebs keeps them fairly snug or it wouldnt work correctly.

Compare the lenghts of belt, you cant really adjust the motor and tranny length. You can but I doubt if its changed, what happened that you bought a new belt?

I bet they gave you the wrong belt, I know the belt for the 700 and 800 are longer than the belt on my 425 and I think the 425 and 500 are the same.

How did you judge that the belt was loose?
It is supposed to be loose at idle and then the clutches tighten up and pinch the sides of the belt when you increase the RPM's

on my 02' 500 i had i replaced the stock belt w/ an 02'top cog 700 belt which worked good for me. there is very little belt deflection (up and down) on an ebs set clutch.

Ok so I changed my belt one more time this time with the same part # belt that was on there before and it is still doing the same thing. I dont think it is to lose but I could be wrong. This is driving me nuts. I want to go riding but I want to fix my bike before I go.

Too much information here!

Take your clutch cover off, if you have EBS the belt should be tight, if not EBS you should have some slack. If that looks ok, in park rev your engine and look at the clutches, the primary should sqeeze the belt and the belt and secondary should start moving. The faster you rev the engine the belt will move up the primary and the belt will ride down into the secondary. Slowly rev the engine and you will see the belt ride to the top of the primary and to the bottom of the secondary. Let off the throttle and the belt and clutches will go back to idle position. If not something is broke or stuck.
