Idle in water
If you are stuck underwater and your intake is close to sucking in water, I would shut it off and get winched out. If you are able to back up and the water isn't in danger of going in the intake snorkel, keep the idle up to keep exhaust going out your pipe, and use your left hand to put it in reverse. Not huge idle speed. Just enough to keep the air in the exhaust going in the right direction.

Idle in water
The same problem was with my sportsman last time, when I needed to left it in the river for 40 minutes. What about making a special snorkel for exhaust? I've seen such snorkels, but I guess they must be made from metal, although I've seen plastic, just need to be sure that it will not get melted.
