Default 500 Sportsman Gearcase Lubricant

I just purchased my first quad, a used 2000 Polaris 500 Sportsman and am in the process of changing the gearcase lubricant in the transmission. I bought the service manual which is very helpful. But, I'm a little confused about the transmission fluid. What is "Polaris Premium Gear Case Lubricant" PN 2871478?

While I'm sure the factory recommended fluids work best, are there not replacement fluids that will also work? I see that several folks have posted that Amsoil offers a replacement fluid for this application, but is there any product available at the local auto parts stores that will work?

Valvoline Synthetic gear oil?
Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil?

And if so, what weight?

Thanks for any help you can give!

From what I understand, a thicker oil will not harm your unit, but it may engage 4 wheel drive when you don't intend to.

I think he is taking bout the Transmission fluid not the hub fluids.

I use a full synthetic snowmobile chain case oil. The Sleds chain case also has a high, low , reverse and a chain in there like the SP500 tranny,so why would it not work in a Sportsman's tranny as well,so far so good.

Ahhh, sorry! I read too fast @ work! I guess the word transmission was in the beginning of this thread a million times!!

I believe there is a maintenance kit that contains all fluids, right? ie; tranny; gear; motor oils? Not trying to hijack this thread, but I just picked up a used 2002 quad and plan to do this, too.

I have a 1996 Polaris 300 Xplorer 4x4 and I needed to replace the Trans Oil in it with PN 2871478 but I didn't have a Polaris dealer "Near" me so I went to the cycle shop near me and asked them. They gave me Transoil 10w 30 for 2 stroke engines and it works just fine. I don't know how different Transoil 10w 30 is than regular 10w 30 motor oil is but I will say it looks identical. Hope this helps.

I am pretty sure that is what you need - the Polaris Premium Gear Case Lub because I changed mine in the spring. It is very thin and a purplish color.
