Hello all. What kind of oil is best to use and what filter do I need to change my oil? I would like to get them from the parts house and not Polaris. My book says to use 2W-50 synthetic. No one has 2W-50. I can however find 5W-50. Will it hurt my ATV if it is not synthetic? Does anyone know if Polaris will still honor the warranty if I don't use there oil?

I think you'll have to use an oil that "meets or exceeds" Polaris specs.

The manual for my 800 says "Althogh Polaris Premium 4 is the only oil recommended for use in ths engine, use of any API certified SH oil is allowable as long as it's 0W-40."

Your owners manual might say something similar.

I use Amsoil Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40 in my 800. Other guys here have good luck with Mobil 1 as well. Whatever brand or weight you use, I'd stick with synthetic.

As far as filters, I use Purolator in both mine. I use the PL14610 in my 800 and PL14612 in my 500.

Good luck.

I have followed Oil filter construction for a few years.
This study is one example of what people find with Filters from different manufacturers.

it is by no means an endorsement or an attempt to change your mind. We all have "Brands" we like.
Like Chevy/GM, Chrysler/Dodge, Ford/Lincoln etc.

It is just meant to be more information for that processing tool between my ears. Hope you find it useful too.

My book says 2W-50 but every one keeps saying 0W-40. What is the difference between 2W-50, 5W-50, and 0W-40? I can only find 5W-50 at NAPA.

I was talking to my Dealer the other day about this and since I have 2 bikes was looking for suggestions. He said that you can use any oil that meets the specs, but he recommended I buy Polaris. Also he said for a 500 and an 800 you can use the same oil as the 800 uses.
Even said buy it in bulk you will save a bunch of $$, I am not sure what that means yet. hehe.

Anyway, also looking at the Filter link I gave above, down at the bottom are some reference links. IN there is a "Bike" recommendation but mostly in those pages it listed the Pure One Purolator as a recommended. But mostly I saw if you can "fit" them the Filter for an 800 will work on a 500, it is just a little longer i.e. more filter material.

Again, you make your own decisions, but it is always best to be armed with good info.

Polaris # 2540086 for 700-800 motors NOT interchangeable with #3084963 Polaris or (Ph6017 fram)! Internal design and flow different! Use caution on aftermarket filters! I'm not pushing polaris filters, have used fram in a pinch, and favor as BEST alround filter WIX (or Napa gold same filter) Dont just put on anything that fits! As stated in my service manual, 500 filter on 700-800 can cause engine damage!

Yea I agree OPT, the 500 filter is shorter, carries less filter area with generally the same filtration capability. That would most likely lead to Less Flow! Not good to put that on a 700/800.

As that link and most others say, Not all filters, like Oils are Equal.
Guess it all depends on what you are after.

In any cases where I chose a different filter than OEM, it was always for specific qualities Like More Filter Area or Finer Particulate filtration or Higher flow rates.

Again as you stated "Dont just put on anything that fits! ..."
