Default Clunk, when shifting into forward or reverse on my Trail Boss 330

I just picked up a 2004 trial Boss 330, with low hours. Would it be considered fairly normal to hear a click/clunk when shifting into forward or into reverse?

I hold the brake while shifting and the idle seems to be low enough. I checked the trans fluid and it's clean and up to proper level.

When you put it in gear, does it jerk forward or backwards too?

If so, then the idle may be too high. A little noise is to be expected, but a loud clunk is not normal.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

If you have hard miles on it you need to check the silent chain in the tranny.Do this by jacking it up and see how much play you have turning the rear clutch before the wheels start to move.

No it doesn't jerk, I don't have to give it a hard push or pull either, just seemed kinda loud sometimes.

Thats what I wanted to hear. I haven't had a chance to get out and ride it yet just riding around my small yard, where I need to shift from forward to reverse more than I would on the trails.

ftwflh, thanks, I'll check that out.

Off topic here....We had an 02 Trail Boss... if you wanna add a little zip to it, drop a tooth in the front sprocket. It'll take away a little of the top speed of the machine, but it doesn't really have all that much top speed to lose. It's a great little machine tho, and for us, it was bulletproof.

They all have this problem. I have a 2000 trail boss 325, and two trail blazer 250s (2stroke) They all do this. Just make sure the transmission has enough fluid in it.
