Default Towing ability...

I am renting a chipper next week, weighs ~1800 lbs.

I have a 2006 700 efi sportsman. Already bot the 2" inch ball, so all set there.

What have u all towed and am i going over board with trying to move this chipper around the yard?

Thx
Tim

it will most likely pull it using low range, but it's pushing it and the tongue weight is going to really squat the irs suspenion. it the terrain isn't to bad then you might be just fine again using low range. imo

Default Towing

Thx gents

Terrain where i will be using is gently sloped hills, so,i was thinking i wud be in good shape. Was kinda surpised the chipper weighted that much, but guess its a lil bigger than i thought.

We had 14 inches a month ago and lost two big oaks, and about 15-20 limbs of arious sizes. Pretty amazing storm, as leaves where still on the trees.

Thx again

I dont think 1800 lbs of trailer weight should be a problem if you take it easy. The tongue weight could be if the trailer is really front heavy, which it probally isnt.

I have the sportsman 800 x2 which is rated for 1500 lbs towing. yours might be 1250 lbs? The x2 is more because its heavier and the suspension is angled toward the rear for passenger weight. My dealer told me they can pull alot more but they are rated for braking, so if your going down the road with 1500 lbs behind a 900 lb atv that is all it can stop Or backing 1500 lbs down the boat ramp.

I use mine to tow a 18 foot fishing boat that weighs about 1900 lbs a half mile down the road to launch and pull the boat out on a sandy shore. No problems.

A buddy of mine rented a big industrial chipper one time and we worked late into the evening with it. We tried to pull it up a dew covered grassy slope with our trucks. (Mine was a GMC 2500 with rear locker) They would not get up the wet grass. Hooked it up to my X2 and it did make it squat a little but I put it in low AWD and it pulled it up and over the top of the hill with no problem. My buddy, his sons, my sons, and a couple others were thinking they'd have to push the chipper but they didn't even have time to push. I was gone. I wouldn't want to do this for miles on end though. As others have said it's tough on a quad that weighs 900 lbs. to stop with 2500 lbs. behind it.

i have also used a indust. size chipper w/ my 800 which has plenty of power to haul it, but it's hard on the suspenion because of the weight and also becareful when going down the hill as w/ that much weight behind you it will push that lighter bike w/ no problems and you won't be able to stop it as the wheels wil just lock up. just my

I've hauled trailers filled with wood that way a lot more than #1800. The key is to make sure the tongue weight isn't too much that it breaks the suspension. In terms of the overall weight, no problem.

Default As always, thx Gents for the advice....

My suspension settings, which i have to imagine is stock, is the least firm. I believe the rears i can manually adjust vs the fronts, which need a bit of labor and a few parts to firm up, esp when using a plow. U can def get away with it, but the front really wants to sag.

So wondering, when u are referring to tongue weight, if im going to be pulling a serios chipper around the yd, would it be safer for me to adjust the shock settings or that would do nada. My instinct is nada, but figured i wud ask.

If it's not a major league chore to adjust the shock/springs to their stiffest settings, go for it. The stiffer the suspension the better.
