Default xp and sportsman oil filter

Some info on oil filters for xp and other sportsman atv. If you buy purolators best oil filter, pure one get a $2 rebate. I paid $ 3.39 for a filter for my xp (after rebate) so I stocked up. I have been using pure one filter for years and I think they make a very good filter they are rated very high with mobil 1 , amsoil at a fraction of cost. Here are the numbers for XP's pl14612 and for the 600,700 and 800's it is pl 14612. I also use mobil one syn. 0w- 40 which is also on rebate paid $ 2.49 after rebate. you might want to stock up. Happy 4-wheelin

Correction on the sportsman 600,700 800 oil filter # should be PL-14610 . I also believe that the 500 is also # PL 14610. Sorry if I caused any confusion

I know people have used filters that say are ok for both engines(the single and twins) but when the 600 and 700 first came out Polaris engineers said not to make the mistake of using the 500 filter for the 700 as the relief valve is different in the 700 oil filter.Even Wix shows two different numbers on cross reference charts. #3084963 Polaris 500 (Wix #51358) #2540086 Polaris 700,800. (Wix #51356) I'd be careful on one filter that might say is good for both engines. Just my on this one.

It does look like the differance is in the length 51358 is 2.782 long and the 51356 is 3.4 inchs long the bypass pressure is stated at 8 psi on the 51358 and on the 51356 it states that it is 8-11 , I do not know why the 1 states 8 and the other has a 3lb variance otherwise the specs seem the same . The one may have a clearance problem I have not owned a 500 so i don,t know if it would work on the 500

The difference in the relief valve pressure was what the engineers were concerned about and stressed this at the first new model classes we attended when the 600 and 700 came out and not to interchange filters. They were worried about engine damage especially on the twins. And being a Polaris shop we used the Polaris filters that were called for on each machine.

I am certainly no expert on the matter, but I've been toying with this for a couple months. I've talked to a WIX tech guy who told me the only difference between the 2 filters is the length. Suppposedly, the relief valve is 8psi on both. I'd really like to just buy one filter, and thinking about trying the 51356 on our 500. I just don't want to screw up, lol.

This is totally up to you. I look at it the same as I do what my two autos suggest on oil. I'd like to run 5w20 in my suv and truck to simply things, but it's called for only on the Honda engine and I wouldn't trust this viscosity in my 5.3 V8 truck engine. Same on what's called for on my truck I wouldn't run in the suv. Here's some other cross references on the 500 filter as I don't believe the twins are represented in this list. look how many different applications the #5 filter (Polaris 3084963) can be used on.Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference

OPT,

I totally agree with you. I only use what's specified for a particular engine also. My point was that a WIX rep told me they were the same except for the length. I wasn't sure if length originally made that much of a difference on the 500. My concern was that Polaris originally specified different filters for the machines for whatever reason. I have to assume it was certainly for more than just length, and the WIX rep was wrong.

HOWEVER, the last several times I have gotten filters from the local Polaris dealers, they have given me the same filter (2540086) for both bikes. And so far, no problems. I'm certainly no expert, and like most people, have to rely on the dealership to give me the right parts for my machines. So I guess my question is: Are my dealers wrong too ?

In the long run, I'll do what I have to do make sure sure the correct parts are on the bikes. But if the Polaris dealers are giving out the same filter for both bikes, I have to assume (yes I know about assumptions, lol) the same WIX filter would also work for both bikes. If I can buy oil and filters from somewhere other than Polaris, it'll certainly help the wallet.

If you'd come to our shop you'd have left with a 3084963 for the 500 and 2540086 for the 700 and 800 simply because that's what's called for on each of these machines. Regardless of whether they can interchange or not is not really what a dealer should be concerned about. It's simply a cya situation if something happened engine wise that you could come back to the dealer with later on. Oil,filters, spark plugs, politics and religion, preferences that everyone has and you certainly can't win any debates on.
