Default alternative oil

Does anybody have an opinion as to what is a suitable alternative oil to ps-4 for an oil change for the sportsman 400/500 atv?

Locally they want about $12/qt for the stuff. Thanks.

0w40,2w50,5w50,take your pick! Polaris has changed oil that it's hard to keep up with. You can use any good synthetic oil with in this range. Mobil 1,Amsoil,Penzoil,even Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic is ok. Doesn't matter if it's even car oil as any friction modifiers wont hurt as there isn't a wet clutch in the 500 engines.

What about the 08-10 Sportsman 400HO that has a wet clutch? PS-4 only?

On the imported ones that have the internal wet clutch yes,I'd stay with PS4,but Rotella T6 synthetic is JASO-MA rated (motorcycle approved) and I wouldn't hesitate to use it. I've got it my Honda Nighthawk right now and never have had any clutch slippage. Just as long as any oil doesn't say "energy conserving" which has friction modifiers added to the oil should be safe to use on these machines.
