Default 1996 Polaris 500 sportsman help needed

i made a post last week about quad tranny not going in gear, but after inspection i think i found the problem so now need suggestions. i took off clutch cover and noticed that the front clutch doesnt go in like it supposed to when pushing the gas to make the belt move up. the atv sat up for 2 years before i got it and a new belt has been installed. should i try to spray wd40 on clutch to see if it will loosen up and squeeze in as it should? can this be fixed easily or do i need to buy a whole new clutch? desperate to get atv running before bow season starts but my budget is limited and all help and advice is appreciated. thanks in advance

Probably the plain bearings the clutch sheath rides on has rust and sticking after setting so long. I'd remove the belt to keep oil off it,spray the clutch especially inside the shaft and counter weight area with PB Blaster. See if you can push the outer clutch plate in a little and spray PB Blaster in and let it soak awhile. Crank the engine up and rev it up several times in neutral to see if it will break through the corrosion and rust and operate correctly. If it doesn't it may have to be taken apart, cleaned up and any worn parts replaced. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

thanks old polaris tech, how do i go about getting all the pb blaster off once it does start working again so i dont have to worry about the belt slipping. im going to get pb blaster as soon as i get out of class this evening and will spray a little bit and let sit for a few hours and then give it a try and will post afterward to report if it works. thanks again

Cheap can of Wally World brake/carb cleaner will clean up the oil and dries pretty quick and it didn't hurt the hard plastic guide buttons. We bought this stuff by the case as it was cheaper than what we could get from our suppliers.

Sorry,it doesn't work that way or I'd be calling a heck of a lot of people. If you still have problems, just post them. If I can't answer them, there's plenty of people on the forum that can..

lol i understand.....well i did get it unstuck by taking it off and persuading it a little bit with a hammer and some pb blaster and now i can ride it. when it is in neutral and i try to put it in gear it shuts off everytime so i have to start it in gear. she is smoking something awful and i drove in down the road a bit and she stalled out under full throttle and just cut off on me and took a while to get it to start again and i had to use choke. like i said she sat up for 2 years with the fella i got it from so im sure its a host of things that need fixing

Sounds like you need a carb kit, plenty available on Ebay, plus still sounds like the clutches are sticking/needing service, especially if it's putting pressure on the belt and rear clutch if you can't shift from neutral without it creeping or stalling.Plus you said it has a new belt. If it's not an oem Polaris belt, some after market belts can be too tight or too wide and cause problems especially on shifting.
