Default Sportsman 2005 twn Just Purchased..should i change Fluids 42 Run Hrs?

Hello Everyone,

I am new to your forum.

I just purchased (from Friend) a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700 Twin for my son.

It has 42 Run hours and 235 miles on it. Original owner only used it for plowing his property and light trail travel. Obviously he didn't do much of either

I would like to have the fluids changed. (either myself or dealer) He said he had it done 12 months ago.

Is this simple to do for a weekend mechanic?

Do you think it is necessary at this point? Also, would you recommend that I take it to a dealer for a check up?

Thanks you for your help.

Mike

If I just bought a used one no matter who from,I'd do a service for peace of mind.Only oil you can differ on is the engine oil itself. Some still use 0w40 Mobil1 or Amsoil, or any good Synthetic 5w40,5w50.Use Polaris designated oil for the transmission and front diff, can't find any much better.Plus oil filter choice is wide open other than Polaris #2540086 (700/800 engines) and #3084963 325-500 engines.

If this isn't enough, here's another list of filters that interchange and work on other machines.http://www.oilfilter-crossreference....OLARIS/2540086
If you don't have a manual, here's one well worth the 5 bucks. Service and intervals are straight forward and can save you trips to the dealer on other service and repairs.http://polaris-atv.brssm.com/2005-Po...ce-Manual.html
Also if you have the carb model 700,make sure the ecm module (under the front panel) is a silver color Sure Power module and not a black finned Chinese module. PO may or may not have had this recall done. http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/02/...scrambler.html

Well no one here I dont believe will have more knowledge than opt, I think he wrote the polaris bible.
Now from my far inferior knowledge I learned a very expensive lesson. I change my own fluids and it may take an hour for all 4 fluids and filter. Once u do it along with your son it will be easy.
But, if you take it to a dealer maybe once a year they will look at other components u dont think about, in my case my bike didnt go to a dealer for 3 yrs I did all the changes about 5-7 times a year with my type of riding and that can be very expensive for a dealer to change the fluids that often. My motor mounts were bad causing major damage to shaft ans bearings and that was a 2500 bill along with a few other things. If I had taken it in prior the mounts are only about 35 each and 1hr of labor could have prevented my failure. The 200 or so theycharge for a fluid change to me is a good piece of mind and I hate spending that much for an oil change and I have 7 bikes.
good luck

I take it the twins use the same oil filters as the single then?
42 hrs and its on its second oil change, I don,t think I,d bother doing anything but ride.
235 miles is like two and a half tanks of gas.
A dealer will charge you $200 to tell you their is nothing wrong with it.

Default Thanks for help...going to take it to dealer for first tune u

Thank you very much for your help. My son wants to ride this weekend at the hunting lodge so I am going to take it to a Polaris dealer this first time. I don't have the time to get the manual before then.

With 42 hours, I don't anticipate any major problems...(I hope)

Thanks again

Mike

I used to preach about not mixing up the 3084963 (for the singles) with the 2540086 filters (700/800) as Polaris told us,BUT the more I looked into it,there's not that much difference even on the bypass valve setting and flow rate that could cause that much concern. It's just a matter of length for the most part.

IMHO I would change the fluids, and do it myself. Its not a difficult task. This way You know when they were fresh and when to change them again. As far as bringing it to dealer hoping they will give it a once over when you bring it in for fluids, dont hold your breath.Educate yourself on what to look for,ie bad or noisey bearings,cv joints,u joints, tie rods, all those things are easily checked for wear and tear.

I have never heard that that the K&N filters were not recommended....I have used them off and on for years as well as the AMSOIL brand...Not that I want a whole brand discussion but what is the concern about that list of filters? Thanks..

Now I'm thinking I misread the post...It looks like all motorcycle filters are not recommended(no brands listed) but the next list IS the recommended list...See how things get messed up on the web.....Sorry
