Carb or efi model? Start at the battery and connections first. Have it load tested plus see if the ecm(carb model) or regulator(efi model) is charging 14 volts back to the battery at an idle.ecms were a problem on the carb models plus under recall if you still have the Black Chinese ecm.Polaris Industries Expands Recall of ATVs Due to Fire Hazard | CPSC.gov Beyond that it can be anything from clutches to electrical. This 5 buck manual has trouble shooting guides to help narrow down the problem. 2006 Polaris Sportsman 700 EFI Service Manual PDF Download

It's an efi model and isn't it apparent it's not charging? Because it won't run without hell from an external battery

9 out of 10 times it's the regulator, but on occasion can be a faulty stator. On all the yellow wires leading to the regulator from the stator, check that you have some resistance between each one and NO yellow wire zeros out to ground on the stator yellows. If this checks out just order a new regulator.Plus if this has been going on for some time, the battery may need to be replaced if it's been drained down constantly. Replace the battery first, then check charging again.Buy New Regulator/Rectifier Polaris Sportsman 700/800 ATV - 4011100 Sportsman 800 EFI (05-06)

That cheap manual can tell you, plus help in many more ways. Try holding the reverse over ride/display button down with the key off. Turn the key on while holding the button and release when the display lights up. Then toggle through the different modes. This is from an 05 manual, may be different than yours, plus if battery is low,may not work.
