thanks for the tip I intended on letting it cool. as far as marking it, it seems as though it is flush as in there is no where to mark the depth.

Mark around the circumference of the seal that's inside the strut.Just clean the oil and grease around it.This the stopping point on the new seal.

gotcha I'll take another look but it seems as though it's flush and nowhere to mark or score.

UPDATE: I fixed the ball joint, the new seals, re packed the bearings, replaced the fan, and replaced the f/r axle. I took it out on Saturday and had a blast. I did a bit of trail/sand/mud and climbing. It all held together pretty nicely. No problems whatsoever (other than top siding and not able to get our without some help. 4WD only works if you can get traction lol.

Now you'll know what to do if it happens on the other side.

Several videos on you tube. You don't have to pull the drive shaft out, just get out out of the strut to change a cv boot, but for some it's easier on the work bench. This is from the rear, but basically the same.Just pull out the strut a little, wiggle the cv out of the strut, remove the clamps, slide up the boot and with a brass hammer or dead blow, knock the cv off the shaft. Slide off old boot,on with the new one ,then tap the cv back on the shaft, replace the clamps.
