Default 2007 Scrambler 500 winding noise

Just picked up an 07 Scrammy 500. Everything seems great except for a crazy whining or winding noise coming from what appears to be the tranny. Anyone else experience this? If so, what am I looking at to fix it? It's loud as hell, drowns out the sound of the motor and only happens in forward gear and when I'm on the gas.

Man this can be anything from a Russian or Chinese bearings howling that a lot of models used,a silent chain that isn't silent any more or a worn set of gears or engagement dogs.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If it's making that much noise, time to tear it down. Several you tube videos on this to give you an idea.

I had a feeling that was the problem. I watched the videos. Doesn't look too terribly difficult, but besides the obvious stuff, anything I should look out for or be aware of?

More trouble taking stuff off the machine so you can pull the gear case out than the actual work involved in repairing it. Hopefully it's just a worn out silent chain as most sport models are usually run hard and the chains do stretch over time along with an occasional bad shaft bearing. Just be sure to check all gears for worn teeth and engagement dogs along with worn shift forks.Use either Polaris AGL or suitable oil for chain driven gear cases.

Sounds good. I'll be tearing into it this afternoon. Thanks, OPT. You're the man.

Ok, so how in the hell do I get the drive shaft off? I'm out of ideas and there just doesn't seem to be enough room

And does the bolt on the left side of the swingarm go into the tranny? If so, you know what size the socket is? I don't think I have any that big.

Disregard. I did a search and saw you answered the same question for someone else. Thanks again

So this is what I found inside. Looks clean as hell. I can't see any damage. Only thing I'm not really sure about is the chain tension. Neither one of them seem to be very tight. What do you think?

And here's a link to a small video I took. Can't tell exactly what is making the noise. Thanks again for all your help
