Carb rebuild
I have removed the carb and all jets except the needle jet. Does it need to be removed and cleaned in this process? Not seeing much dirt or varnish in carb. It ran ruff before and put some carb cleaner in gas and it helped some. Top end is lacking only around 30. Atv set for a while with little run time before I purchased. 1996 sportsman 500 600 miles. Will check the inline filter after carb finished and installed. Any other suggestions or advise? Thanks

IMO yes the needle jet needs to be removed and cleaned thoroughly since you have the carb off anyway..Not necessary to pull the jet block assy. Plus look closely at the float needle and seat for any shiny spots on the needle sides,wear marks on the inside of the seat. And also the float arm pin for any wear. This can cause floats to stick along with a worn needle and seat. If you have doubts on the needle and seat,just get a carb kit. I see no indication of wear or dirt or varnish on anything. The rubber is like brand new. I will remove the needle as soon as I figure out how. The manual is not real clear. Take the top out and turn carb on side and remove, that told me a lot. I remember reading something about using an ink pen to remove something, was that it? A flat side has to be in a certain way etc etc.

This pdf on the fuel system can help on all Polaris carbs whether the VM series or the BST34 or 40. You have the BT34. Shows more into detail and how to set the float level. Plus the main jet holds the needle jet in place.
