Cooling fan 2008 sportsman 500HO Carb
I was having a problem with my fan. would start and stop!!! Dash would flash HOT!!! was making howling noises....
The bearings were pretty crunchy so I put new ones in.. fan works great now.... EXCEPT the fan still starts and stops like its kicking out a relay!
I can't find relays on this quad anywhere!!! There is a black box that is for Voltage regulator, Hot indicator light and fan relay.
I certainly hope that the one and only fan relay can only be serviced buy changing a $200 part to correct a $4 relay!!!!
Even if I unplug that box, the fan will still turn on( when i disconnect the temp sensor on the engine) but will still cycle every 10 to 15 seconds.
So thats why i'm puzzeled... If the relay is in the same box as the regulator, why would the fan still come on without it plugged in???
EFI models have a seperate relay.... Carb models dont?!?!
HELP!!!

Frustrating I know, but that's what it's come down to with the controls, circuit breakers, charging, fan control, etc all stuffed into one control box without a thermo sensor directly on the radiator like on past models. It's wired up directly to kick the fan on and have the hot light flash when pulling the hot sensor lead on the head. Sounds like you've solved the fan problem, but still have a faulty ecm that others have had also.Plus the black box is silver now. 4011568 Polaris | eBay

If you're an electrical engineer then anythings possible, but like I mentioned the ecm controls so many functions. Having all the circuit breakers contained in one box,the battery protection circuits, fan controls, temperature controller, light relay, three phase regulator, accessory power controls, starter lock out controls to name the important ones.I suppose there's always a way to bypass anything, but i wouldn't do it.But that's just me,an old mechanic.. If it's any consolation this ecm module is $180 bucks at Partzilla.

1. Disconnect the harness from the fan motor.
2. Connect a DC ammeter in between the fan switch
harness wires as shown.
3. Verify fan is free to rotate. Turn ignition key and
engine stop switch to “ON” position. Read the
current draw on ammeter with fan running.
4. If the fan motor draws more than 8.8 Amps,
replace the motor.
Fan Motor Current Draw:
Less Than 8.8 Amps
If the hot light comes on along with the fan when cold then still possibly a faulty ecem module. If it's not, then it possibly could be a fan problem. If you need a manual here's one for 5 bucks.http://polaris-atv.brssm.com/2008-Po...ce-Manual.html

Amp draw key on engine off.. 8.8 amp.
Key on engine on 2500 rpm.. 10.59 amp.
Think I found the culprit!!
Thanks again OPT.
