Default Regulator question

I have a 2003 600twin with the upgraded ignition system. I am having battery/charging issues. (Flashing battery signal and flashing speedo needle) I have a new battery on order so hopefully that is it but can I just use the diagnostic mode to check voltage when it is running? also, if I need a new regulator, does anyone know which 1 to order? With the upgraded ignition I wasn't sure which regulator to buy?

Thanks,

You can use diagnostic mode to check voltage but a voltmeter may be more accurate directly at the battery to check charging voltage. Look at the regulator. Should have a LR# somewhere on it. If it's the LR302,this is an expensive regulator. Plus if it has 5 wires(can't remember on the kits) then you can probably use one like this that's cheaper.2004 Regulator Rectifier Sportsman 600 Polaris 4010929 Your regulator may have the part# also. If it's 2204317 or 4010929 here's a better price on one.

I'll take the "hood' off tonight and see what info is on the regulator. Once the new battery comes I'll do a voltage check as well. Should be around 14v with lights on and engine above idle??

as always thanks for the quick response OPT...

The newer type electrical systems should charge pretty good even at an idle. With lights on yes should be close to 14 volts or more.

I put the old battery back in. Machine barely turns over but did start. According to the voltmeter, I am at around 13 at idle when I turn the lights on it drops to about 12. When I increase the idle even with the lights on the volts go up to about 14.5. I am assuming then that it is just a bad battery and not the voltage regulator. Does that sound correct? Also the part number on the regulator is 4013047. I haven't been able to locate that part number on any parts sites yet if it turns out that I need to replace it

Does sound like the battery is the problem as the charging is good. Probably has a dead or weak cell and can't maintain or keep the voltage out put from the regulator. Looks like that part number is nla. Can't find it either. Probably just supplied for the kits only and not a general part.

New battery is in and seems like everything is fine. No flashing battery light and voltage is up.. Shout out to batterymart.com that mailed me a battery in 3 days after ordering and at a lower cost than any local auto parts store.

Glad it was just the battery and not the regulator. Can't remember if the update kits had a 4 wire or 5 wire regulator and the on line parts lists get a little confusing at times on these.
