Ran without battery, now nothing.
06' Hawkeye 300 2x4.
Took the battery out while it was running to put it on the charger, daughter drove down the street and I heard a pop or backfire sound. Now it's dead. I found out the hard way about not running a battery to buffer the power. Hooked the battery back up and was trying to pull start and the CDI started smoking, turned the key on and without trying to start it and it smoked again. So without it being able to start it's hard to test the electronics, but I know the CDI needs replaced. I checked the wiring and everything looks fine. Should I change the Voltage Regulator also? What about the Solenoid? Stator? How can I test them to see if they are working without the quad running? Hate to just throw money into the parts if they don't need to be replaced. I'm pretty handy with a wrench, but not so much with electronics. I have a test light and a couple multi meters.
EDIT: So I've been reading a lot since I came across this site today. I noticed a trend in the battery causing the Voltage Regulator to go bad which in turn causes the CDI to go bad. I also see there is a fuseable link after the Solenoid, do these links go bad/burn up? Is there a way to test to make sure the link is good? I'm just trying to work my way back from the battery, I have a brand new battery ready to use. I'm not at home to test everything right now, but it looks like I may need the CDI and VR at least.
