I see the short yellow wire leading out separately from the 3 wire yellow connector that goes to the ecm in chapter 10 page 9 of the manual that shows the stator/alternator. The wiring diagram itself doesn't show this extra wire at all for some reason. This was the first year model for the ecm module that replaced the common regulator before and possible it may be not used or extra yellow? Does the machine run? Is it charging ok back to the battery as is?
Top of the pic.Plus no speedo on this model.Could be the reason for the extra yellow. Optional speedos could be ordered from dealers that came with a new pod cover if I remember correctly(been too damn long ago) and then that yellow wire might come into play.

Just my luck that it's not shown. The battery is brand new. About 12.5 volts on it now. It is not charging. When I had it running I had my meter on it and when I increased the rpm's the voltage did not change at all. Could the voltage regulator have gotten fried when he hooked the cables up backwards. Can you check it with a meter. Is there a fuse in that circuit anywhere. Also, when it is running, should all three of the yellow wires have voltage output. I know the center one does cause that's where the short yellow comes off. Thanks for your patience.

The ecm module contains the regulator/rectifier,fan control, has the circuit breakers and controls other functions all in this one box. There is an rpm limiter module to the left of the ecm module and there is a yellow lead from it. Don't know if it's already hooked up or if that's where the ecm yellow goes to.

It is plugged in. Did you get my last reply about the voltage regulator. Thanks again

The three yellows produce ac voltage from the stator to the ecm,it's changed to dc voltage by the rectifier/regulator that's inside the ecm. Red,red/white wires coming out of the large ecm connector are dc voltage.

If I have voltage on all three wires would that mean that the voltage regulator is bad. And how would I check it. Once I again thank you

All three yellows come from 3 separate charge coils in the stator, combine into the 3 prong plug. They produce ac voltage into the ecm, change the ac voltage to dc voltage by the internal regulator/rectifier.The 3rd short wire coming separately out of the connector still may be the problem as I can't remember where it may tie into.Plus you said that voltage increases on this wire as it's rpms go higher.Battery's not charging so would seem it's still down to that one short wire.

Could it be the voltage regulator?

ONCE again the rectifier/regulator is inside the ecm module..Possible you got a bad one,but at this point rather than spending more money on a new one on a guess, I'd let a good mechanic look at what's going on with the charging problem. Still could be related to the owner hooking the battery up backwards. We can only guess. Still may be something simple you've over looked.
