Hey guys and girls, I just picked up a 2001 Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4 that appears to be in pretty darn good condition and I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer...

Ay specific issues with these atv's that I should look at before riding too much and / or monitor?

2 stroke oil, I was thinking of just buying the polaris brand, is that fine? Synthetic or synthetic blend?

Maintenance - what all should be greased and gone over prior to riding?

Chain grease - just buy something at the dealer or is there something just as good cheaper?

Anything else I need to know? This is my first atv and I'm pretty **** when it comes to maintenance, cleaning and making sure it's taken care of. Any help would be appreciated. Also, anyone direct me to a owners and maintenance manual?

Also, what is best to do with the battery when it's gonna sit for a month or so? I've heard to leave it on a trickle charger or just disconnect it.

Any 2 stroke injector or premix oil is ok. Almost all are rated tcw3. Even Wally world oil is ok,Quick Silver,Penzoil,Amsoil,etc,just stay with the same brand. It doesn't have to be synthetic unless you want to spend the money.You don't have to buy just Polaris oil.The ONLY Polaris oils I'd stay with is the Polaris Demand Drive hub fluid,and the Polaris AGL for the the gear case. Look for the grease fittings on the rear axle carrier,front a-arms,prop shaft and keep the chain adjusted and lubed. Always keep the battery on a "floating" maintainer that can cut off. They are cheap at Walmart,etc. Plus a good service manual for your Explorer is your best investment,can help you on maintenance and all repairs.

You can check Ebay,but a specif one for the Explorer 250 could be hard to find other than the dealer since it was only made a few years,but has the same motor as the Trail Blazer,just the prop shaft,front diff and awd hubs are the main difference from the two wheel drive Trail Blazer.Here's a free pdf link for an owners manual that will help you on service. I'm new to this site and am having issues with my Atv. Does anyone have a 2000 Polaris xplorer 250 4x4 repair manual or wire diagram..my issue is when I bought this Atv,there were wires that were not connected right..I put a few together but my issue is...I only have pulse in my ignition coil but nothing coming out the other end for spark..I have juice coming in to the ignition coil but nothing going out to spark plug..I bought brand new ignition coil but it does the same thing..what can cause this..

 

Don't throw parts at a machine before you have a chance to check the specs out in the service manual. Here's a 2002 manual for 5 bucks. They were only produced from 2000 to 2002 and very little changes between them, if any during their short run.2002 Polaris Xplorer Service Manual PDF Download Has the electrical resistance specs, trouble shooting checks along with the wiring schematic.
