worried about z400
hey guys. I just bought a completly stock 2003 z400...It is in great condition but I read a thread that the 03's have problems with the frame breaking or cracking. I was just wondering how they break and how I can avoid it from breaking. Also what are the other common problems on the 03's. thanks

check all the shock mounts and the frame gussets, thats where most of the cracks are if there is any. I havent had a crack yet on mine and its been flipped and rolled a few times and 1 time at high speed, and the 03 had problems with the fuel petcock plugging up. you can have the frame regusseted if you want to spend the money for it but then it takes time away from riding, most of the cracks came from hard landings from jumping

Here's basicly the deal with '03-'04 Z400 & it's clones, if you race moto-cross and are as fast as the pros and hit 60 ft. tripples, yes you'll break the frame. Otherwise don't worry.
I know there are a few guys on here saying "my frame broke" from "normal" trail riding.... bull$hit!! What they aren't telling you is about the tree they clipped with one side or the other, OR how they were jumping off 10 ft. ledges, or..... etc.etc. you get my point.

This isn't the only brand out there, just the first I found when I did a search.
Gusset kit
If you get one, you will be without a ride for a bit while it's being put on. But, you'll also have piece of mind once it's back together.

My buddy has an '03 that has been abused and not taken care of since new (one of the first on the floor), and it has been rock solid since day one, even thought the plastic is dangling off.

I know several guys who race XC on '03/'04 z400s and they have not broken their frames....
As others have said, it seems on the MX guys were breaking frames on 60-ft doubles and 90-ft table-tops. I don't think too many average trail riders were breaking very many, if any....
Of course if you are worried any welding shop can gusset it for you...
