Default Valve Lash

I know that the lash settings for the 230 are as follows:

.001-.003 - Intake
.003-.005 - Exhaust

This is probably a rookie question, but is it better to be .003 than .001 for the Intake? Is .003 better than .005 for the Exhaust. Should I shoot for the smallest gap, the largest aloud, or inbetween.

Thanks for the quick response. I was able to check the intake valve easily (.004), but I can't get any feeler gauge to work on the exhaust valve. It is really hard to get to also. Do you think I am not exactly at TDC?

are you sure that you adjusted the right valve at .004? the exhaust valve should be easy to get to. its in front on the engine above the header pipe and you have to remove your fuel tank to easily access your intake valve.

I just checked the intake, .004 was the largest gauge that went under. I know I need to adjust it, I haven't yet because I couldn't get any feeler gauge to work for the exhaust valve, so I thought it might not be TDC.

take the spark plug out and use a flashlight and check to see if the piston is all the way up. it makes rolling the engine over easier and you will be able to tell if the piston is at TDC.

I know I have it at TDC and stil can't get any gauge to work on the exhaust valve. Do you think that it could be that it is just that tight?

its way too tight. loosen it up to .004 before you wipe out the cam.
