Default 2003 Eiger stuck in 2wd

So my Eiger had been stuck in 4x4 since the cable had been broken by the previous owner. I decided to muddle around and see about getting it working again. In the process, I pulled the plunger on the front differential out and it seemed to lock into place. Now I can't get the plunger to engage back to 4wd.

I have tried driving around in forward and reverse, jacking it up and letting the shaft spin and everything in between but I just can't get the plunger to engage 4wd again.

Has anyone else had this issue or does anyone know any fixes for it without having to pull out the whole front diff?

Thanks!

I would guess that disuse has caused corrosion on the shaft that slides backwards and forwards into the diff. Raise the front end off the ground and gently tap the shaft back in while spinning the front wheels. It is possible one of the springs has broken, or a circlip come off, but the diff will need a stripdown if it isn't just the shaft sticking.
