Opinion on purchase of 2 1999 King Quad 300's
I have the opportunity to buy 2 1999 king quad 4x4 300's for $1200 bucks (for the pair). Both look in fair but heavily used and faded, but plastics all look complete and not cracked.
1 does not run, motor turns over but does not run, no clue why. Owner is not mechanically inclined but said it is not frozen last he checked.
The other does run, but he has not used it much and it does not like to stay running. My guess is ethanol gas sitting and clogging up the carb.
He says both had good brakes, 4x4 and differential locks all worked, but when one broke down they kind of quit using the other one.
What do you guys think about the deal? I have worked on a lot of 4x4 trucks, lawn mowers, tractors but never a motorcycle/ATV.
My plan is to use them on some property in the mountains, so the super low gears and locking differential is real real important to me.

The 1990s King Quads are not popular bikes and over here in the UK don't make much on the used market, in fact we won't buy one as a trade in because we can't get rid of them. Having said that, the odd one or two that I have worked on seem advanced compared to other makes, with switchable 4WD and diff lock on a 300. However the rear mounted engine makes them feel front end light, and my boss, who worked on them when they were new, recons the control cables stretched and needed constant adjusting, which put him off them.

Thanks for the feedback, and tips about adjustments needed. I guess if the front seems to light I can add water and antifreeze into the tires.
I have been doing a lot more research here in the US they seem to get extremely high regards from people who want more of a utility ATV, which is what I am looking for. Seems very few ATV's have 2 or 4wd selection, Hi, Low, Super low gear ranges and locking front differential. I think I have sold myself on this deal, seems it is much cheaper to fix almost any engine problem possible then it is to add a differential locker to an ATV.

A used ATV that does not run is like having no ATV. Before I would my two that do not run I would buy one that does.
You do not know what's wrong with them and it does not take much before you pouring money into them.
For example this one for $2000 does run and its a 2005 with low range and diff look and even the plastic is shiny. Its $800 more but you can go for a ride atleast at any time. Weekly Used ATV Deal: 4x4 Kawasaki Prairie - ATVConnection.com

If I was you id buy them. I have two of them there tough, rugged, indestructible. The only problem is that it sits lower then all the other atvs ive had mine in sand, mud, rivers even thourgh swamps and it never gave me problems. And if you put it in super low differential lock it will climb anything.

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming. The lower center of gravity is a plus for me on the hills. One of them does run and is rideable, just does not idle well, but with the throttle it will keep running. Could even be bad gas, it has been sitting for a while. I am looking for one much more for a utility and less as a toy to ride. I have property I can walk to the top of the mountain on, but carrying a chain saw, ax etc up there is no fun. Plus I want to build a camp up there so a lot of supplies need to go up, and a lot of huge downed trees need to get moved. So going up hills, pulling a trailer, moving some downed trees around etc is my goal, hence why my draw to these is the super low gears and locker. If it runs, does not knock and has good compression there is no reason I cannot easily fix that one, and I have a spare to try and fix!!! I actually could not split with 2k at this time, wife would kill me, I am lucky I have as much as I do. I cannot find one of these in better condition then the running one for the money anywhere near me. Cheapest I can find one they say it in great running condition is near $2k. A few I can find within a few hundred miles for $1.5k or less say need carb work or a tuneup etc.
Any more advice would be great, I think I am going to buy them this weekend unless something better comes along (doubtful) or someone points out a major flaw in my theory.

I am thinking the one that does not run was submarined, but that is a guess. 90% or more of the price is for the running one. If the running one was tuned up, carb working well I probably would pay this price for just that one, as it would be comparable to the others I can find locally for actually more money. Hope to pick them up soon and start figuring out what is wrong with the one that does not run.

If ones running but not idling then that's not a bad deal, most likely old gas or a carb cleaning from sitting for years. You may get lucky with the other ATV and get it up and going for cheap but at worst you have a good parts ATV.
They are a good work ATV ,even though the are only a 300cc they can be geared down low enough to do any job.
A 300 with low range and Diff lock can pull harder then a 450 without low range and diff lock.

Here is my update in case it helps someone else.
The one was running, before the summer when he last tried to work on them. Got there and it would not run, and 3 of the rear tires will not hold air. Ended up paying $850 and got a nice ATV jack that will lift the whole ATV up a a foot or two.
The good one needs major carb work, gas pumps right through it and floods everything including the driveway. Shut the fuel valve off and with a lot of work, used starter fluid it now starts right up and revs up real good and idles nicely. Sounds like a very good running engine. Other then the front bumper bent up it seems in real good shape, used a lot but in good shape.
The bad one is a mess, it will not shift into 2wd, throttle does not work, I thing the rear end will only power 1 wheel, 1 just spins way to freely. But I will jack the good one up and compare, needs new rear bearings. Lights work, but cannot get into neutral after removing the frozen cable and doing it by hand, or some other problem with the electronics. Looks like they started to remove the front axle or something, but lost the bolts for the arms so they zip tied it in, I assume to roll it around. Front axle seems good, spin one wheel and the other spins. 4x4 works, spin the one rear wheel and the front wheels spin.
We bypassed the starter solenoid gave it a spray of starting fluid and it started right up and idled very nicely, could not rev it with no throttle.
Got 4 tubes on the way for the rear tires to just put tubes in, got all newsed shift cables on the way for the bad one, 2 carb rebuild kits, and I think with some work and some parts for the rear end, and I should end up with two fairly good running ATV's with the features I wanted, or one good one and a lot of spare parts.
It will be a busy weekend playing with the bad one seeing if I can figure out why it is not shifting and the rear end.
