Default 1999 King Quad 300 clutch/transmission question

Got a 1999 parts quad that is 100% complete so want to make it a runner.

Got the engine running. Neutral light does not come on, head lights do. Jump started the starer to start it. It has a rear right axle that is stripped out so it just spins inside the transmission output. It is stuck in 4wd. Turning the left wheel turns the right output in the rear and the front tires.

So we started the engine and reved it a few times. Sounds real good. I tried to click it into gear with all 4 wheels off the ground, none of them spin but I could hear a clicking noise that was not there when in neutral (I assume it did shift to neutral). So I think it is shifting. It sounds like the transmission is shifting.

Could the broken axle be the reason none of the wheels spin since it has 0 resistance?

Just trying to figure out where to start. I do not want to dump money into it until I can figure out how much that will be. I have never worked on an ATV or motorcycle. Is there some cover I can remove to see what is going on, anything I can check to see what is wrong. Have a service manual on the way, but really want to get an idea of what all this needs. I can fix a lot of stuff, just need some pointers on how to check from the running engine to powering the wheels and diagnose how bad it is.

If someone has a clue about this, compatible years for parts would be great info also. Like just get a transmission or front differential from a 1994 though 2002 or what ever years would be a bolt and swap option would be great. I would rather replace the transmission from say a 1996 KQ that has a blown motor as opposed to trying to rebuild a transmission. So knowing my options to rebuild or replace would be great.

With 4WD engaged the front wheels should get power even if the rear axle is shot, what is happening to that long front prop shaft when the bike is running in gear?

Check the cables are allowing correct engagement, and that the splines out of the engine for the front drive are OK, but it looks like you are going to have to look inside the cases for the reason the front drive isn't working.

rear is not spinning either. Will dig in this weekend and see what is going on. could be the high low shifter stuck between gears also. Will play with it and get back.

I got it running real good, picked up a bumper from a kid (probably 20 but that is a kid to me) who told me how they stick sometimes and to really rock it back and forth and get the high low shifter moving freely. Did that and then adjusted the clutch and changed the oil and now it rocks. More I drive it around the better it seems to get. Only thing it needs now is the rear drive shaft that is stripped out inside the yoke. Got one off ebay on the way.

I think I just need to do what Merryman said and check the cables, I think reverse needs a little work and the front axle needs to losen up. I think it has been a long long long long time since this has moved.

If your looking for any parts, all of the king quads from 90 on to 99 used the same parts.
