Default Cannot get a level on dipstick

My son just bought an 04 z400, the other day before he rode it we checked the oil but there was no level in the tank, so I added oil, almost 2 quarts. When he started it up, oil began spilling out of air filter housing. We shut the machine down and attempted to drain oil out of the tank but only got about a shot glass full. I left the plug out of the tank and started the engine, oil began coming out in spurts. I was told to let the machine warm up before I checked it again, which I did, but still did not get a level on the dipstick. Decided to change the oil completely, when I drained the oil only a little bit came out of the tank and about 2+ quarts came out of engine. The filter was very dirty so we changed it also. Once the oil was changed I had a level on the dipstick, however, when I warmed it up, no level. Added the correct amount (2000ml) but still could not get a level. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?

The proper way to measure on the external tanks is to warm the motor up, turn it off and let it sit a few minutes, then check the dipstick. It is easy to overfill them if checking cold, as a lot of oil drains into the external tank once shut off. It sounds like you overfilled it after the first check. You need an owners manual with the full check and fill procedure or someone that has that actual model to chime in though.

Even after I let it sit for a period of time, there is still no level on the dipstick. My concern is that there is too much oil in the engine, I am wondering if the oil pump is going bad and not pumping oil everywhere it needs to. Thanks for the response.

Watch the video. You see him draining the oil from two places?
