Default Lt80 melting starter relay

I just picked up an lt80 that was apparently having starter issues. I hooked up a battery and it just clicked. So, I swapped in a relay from a parts bike I have, and it did turn over but was pretty slow. After cranking it for a while the relay started smoking. So I just bypassed the relay with a jumper wire and that wire started smoking too.

Could there be a short or something in the starter, or another problem I'm not thinking of?

If I can't think of an easier solution I'm going ti put in the starter from the parts bike.

Yup, I spent a couple hours putting in the starter from the parts bike, which included cleaning out the carb and installing a new Uni filter since I was in there. It wasn't too bad, I was able to stand it on end, and strap the front end to the ceiling. Now she's cranking like a champ. Before there was a horrible grinding noise too, that I was hoping was just the starter, which was. No melting wires either.

Now I just need to get it running. Hopefully not too much trouble.

Did you ever get the lt 80 running we tried to help you with in '14 with all the high temp silicone for gaskets.

Haha... That's the "parts bike" now. Turns out I'm only getting 40 psi on this one now. I'm just not having any luck...

I think I need to find a good shop in the area and get my piston, cylinder, and head looked at. Need a new gasket set too.
