Default 2001 400ex timing problem.

ok.... here it goes..... i recently had to replace all the top end gaskets on my 2001 400ex.... while i was at school one of my little cousins (5 year old little girl) decided it would be fun to push the quad around and the timing got knocked waaaaay off..... and now i cant get it lined back up!? there is a little window on the left side of the crankcase that unscrews so you can see the crankshaft\flywheel... it has a "t" and an "f" very close to each other when you role it across the floor in gear.... i read some forums on here and it said to line the "t" up with the notch in the little window... so i did that.... and another forum said to have the cam lobes down so that the 2 parallel lines on the gear on the camshaft were even with the head.. so i did that also..... but when i did both of those things the timing is either one tooth off to the left or one tooth off to the right... i cant get it to line up even!!!!! can someone please explain to me how to do the timing on a 2001 400ex? lol... its my first time working on a 400ex engine and i dont have a manual so any help would be awesome... =) thnx.

I'm having the same problem man, so don't feel bad, I'm about to give up and just take it to the shop, because everyone i talk to don't seem to know a solution to are problem, and the manual says theres no way to adjust the timing.

You've got the right steps down. Line the indicator mark up with the notch just in front of the T, put the cam sprocket in the with the side marked OUT to the outside. Line up the the two marks on the cam sprocket with the top of the cylinder head and make sure the third mark on the cam sprocket is on the top. Then slide the cam into place making sure the lobes are pointed down, put the bearing on the ends and push the cam sprocket onto the cam and put one of the cam bolts in. At this point check to make sure the indicator marked T is still lined up and double check the marks on the cam sprocket, if it is still lined up correctly rotate the engine so that the other bolt hole on the cam sprocket is exposed and install the second bolt. A couple of things to be careful of - 1. Make sure the cam chain tensioner is in place and tightened to normal when you are adjusting the cam sprocket/timing, otherwise it will be off when you do install the tensioner. 2. Make sure you dont drop the cam bearings or alignment pins that sit just outside the bearings into the engine, it will save you alot of headache, believe me.
