I would think the steering would get noticeably heavier in awd. The way I have always checked any full-size 4x4 I bought to see if 4x4 worked was to simply find some dirt or loose gravel and hit the throttle hard from a dead stop. If the wheels spin easily, no 4x4. Even in ice and snow, in 4x4 its hard to spin the tires from a dead stop.

Easy to check if you have a couple jacks to jack up the front and rear tires off the ground a little. On the ground the front wheels wont kick in unless the rear tires loose traction, kicks out when the rear regains traction. With all tires in the air you can tell if the system is working or not. All earlier models did have problems on some plastic roller cage cracking in the front diff. Optional aluminum ones are offered, but expensive for oem parts( Item #24 (opt) aluminum cage.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If that's the problem cheaper ones are offered on ebay.Polaris RZR800 RZR s RZR 4 Front Differential Billet Roller Cage Sprague 3234466 | eBay Plus there are videos on replacing cracked plastic cages.
