I noticed walmart sells the oil filter for my kodiak the other day. That will save me a few miles/bucks.
What part # for the filter ?

Yeah, what make and number for that oil filter that Walmart carries?

My advance auto didn't carry that particular Mobile oil, and I was on hold for 20 minutes with Kmart seeing if they had it before hanging up. Where can you get it?

I went to the Honda place just down the street and got GN4 SAE 10W-40 and it cost me over $12 for three quarts. Man, it is expensive to run these things! If you have to change oil and filter every 10 hours, you pay roughly $15 for an oil filter, $12 for oil, and God knows how much on gas.

Thanks

You can buy the old car oil at autozone. Its the correct oil, SG and no moly, in either 10w30 or 10w40, and its 79 cents a quart. Been using it for years.
Heres a chart for oil filter cross reference, the filter youll need is the [5]. At the bottom of that page is all the filters that interchange. I use the bosch 3300, but the super tech (WalMart SuperTech ST7317)works just fine too. The filter is originally for a mazda car.

I couldn't find the 2005 Kodiak 450 in the oil filter cross reference chart.

Also, I do apologize for being an idiot on the topic, but what specifically can I get at the auto store in terms of oil for the ATV? Does it have to say SG instead of SAE or something?

Thanks!

Sorry I didn't get the part number... I was just killing time while my fiance' was shopping. I wandered down the filter isle and noticed a thin lookup filter book for motorcycles PWC's and atvs. I just looked it up and there it was.

It was the super tech brand.

FYI I know a mechanic who says those supertech filters are some of the best on the market. He had several brands cut in half, and you could really tell some were better than others. He doesn't put fram on anything...

It's still SAE 10w30 or 10w40 but you need to look on the back and find the SG designation. The SAE is not the problem. You also don't want any moly in it (some say as long as there's not too much you're okay, but I'd play it safe) To avoid moly you want to make sure the oil DOES NOT say energy conserving, or something to that effect.

Oh and to the other dude 10 hours is just on the initial break in oil change, after that it's like every 150 hours or 1500 miles or yearly whichever is first.

Most yamahas use the same filter...bruin, kodiak ,grizz, FZ1 streetbike use the same filter. I know that list hasnt been updated in awhile, but the 2006 motor is the same as the 2003 and up motor. Same filter.
Ive used the super tech filter, on my truck and cars, and they seem to be just fine, and they are far cheaper than the name brands.
The fram number for the filter is FRAM PH6017A, and all filter makers will cross reference to that number.

I have a grizzly 660 and use wal-mart super tech 6607 or 7317 filters and they work just fine! They are $2.07. Oil is Shell rotella T 15w-40 or even better Rotella T synthetic 5w-40. It is univrsal diesel/gas engine oil, high quality and is not energy conserving so no molly additives or friction modifiers in it. Runs $2.22 a qt for the regular stuff or $3.68 a qt for synthetic and you aren't paying premium price cause it says yamaha or polaris etc... on the bottle. Change it when it comes due and you will do fine!

For a good "dino" based oil that is readily available, Shell Rotella T in the 10w-40 or the Shell Rotella synthetic in the 5w-40 is a good oil for atv's and bikes. It's a heavy duty engine oil and is rated for use in Allison wet-clutch applications.
It is non "energy conserving" so it is good for use in atv's. I used the Shell Rotella in a 95 Kodiak I used to own and never had any problems.
I now use Amsoil 0w-40 synthetic in all our atv's and it actually stopped the Bruin from leaking oil past the valve stems and smoking on start-up.
In a days ride last week with temps in the 90 degree range, the oil cooler fans came on only once on my Rancher and the Bruin during the slow rides.

Go to this site and look around and you will get some great advice on oil recomendations.

No matter what oil you use standard or synthetic, for a motorsport oil make sure that it does not have a friction modifyer in it (i.e. has the molly as referred to). Good choices would be a mobile 1 or amsoil oil to be top of the line. Yamalube is a half synthetic and half regular mix. Good stuff but yeah, you will pay a dollar or two extra for "Yamaha". Start reading up on what dirtbike racers use and what is being used by those that win. If it works in their modded engines under extreme stress of racing, you'll be fine with your machine. Take a look at Amsoil and comparisons in terms of tests they have conducted such as 4 ball wear test, TBN (total base number), Kinematic Viscosity breakdowns, and Viscosity Indexes. You'll see that Amsoil is number 1 (of course) but Mobile will be right with them as well as a few others. I run Amsoil Formula 4-stroke 0W-40 up here in Alaska in my Kodiak and love it. Starts well in -20 degree weather, and stays cool when we do hit 75 in the summer. My brother uses the 0W-40 in the winter in his raptor and uses Amsoil Motorcycle 10W-40 in the summer to maximize his protection. We are both Amsoil dealers and he is a licensed mechanic for Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Harley Davidson. Questions?

Here is a look at the amsoil: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aff.aspx
If you can't find specs on other brands kinda makes you wonder doesn't it?

In the big scheme of things, you just paid over 6K for a machine, why the heck would you cheap out on the very thing that keeps it running strong for years to come? Just don't go to Burger King this week and you already paid for it.

cheers.
