Default yamaha 400 4x4 ???

My buddy picked one up for $100 and we have no idea what yr it is or anything. What kind of carb is that? It looks like a cv carb or something. Is it full time 4 wheel drive? Does the front diff lock? Anybody know about what yrs yamaha made this?

You need a picture or at least a name or model number or something if you expect us to identify it. Yamaha has been making 400 4x4's since the mid 80's and they are still in production today, so not much can be said only knowing that it's a yamaha 400.

I'll assume that it's pretty old if he got it for 100 bucks though, and with that i'll say that most likely it's full time 4x4 as I believe all the older yamahas were. It's not going to be a locking diff, that's something only found on newer quads.

If you can't find any kind of model number or name on it, I can offer you 2 options to figure out what it might be. Either randomly search for "yamaha 400 4x4" on the internet, ebay and things like that, and try to find a picture of one that looks like the one you have. You can also find the serial number on it, which should be on the bottom left frame tube by the engine, and take that number to a yamaha dealer and get them to look it up for you.

Ok, according to the 10th vin digit, its a 1997 kodiak. As far as I can tell, yamaha never made 400's in the 80's. The first yr was 1993 with the kodiak. They made this model until 1998 and then some stuff changed.... the headlights got farther apart for one thing (looking at pics at bikebandit oem section).

So, is it full time 4x4? There doesn't appear to be any levers or buttons to turn it off n on. And that carb looks like something from a virago or something. Never seen anything like that on an atv. Anyway, its all rusted up and I'm the one that gets to figure it all out, lol... An with no manual...

OR, as I suspect, if it's in running condition then most likely it's stolen at a price like that. Also seems strange that the buyer nor the seller even knew what kind of atv it was...

Run that vin number by the police station and see what turns up...

Heck 97 Kodiak, I will give $500 and come and pick it up, I have a '95 and it is a good rig, I would listen to recon and have a check done on it to make sure it is a legit bike, $100 sounds like way to little to pay for it...Yes, it is full time 4x4 there is no way to switch it out of 4 wheel drive, which depending on conditions make it a untamed squirrel to handle, but for a hundred, I would not complain..

Default yamaha 400 4x4 ???

My friend's family that lives across the street from him bought the quad 6 yrs ago. So, if its stolen, it was done 6 yrs ago. Anyway, my friend asked them what they were going to do with that quad because he hasn't seen it running in a long time. He said $100 if you want it. It was on a trailer heading to the dump aparently, since the trailer was full of trash bags, lol. Its really not in that bad of shape. All the tires are dry rotted, but the odometer only has 1700 miles on it and all the plastic looks really good. Its just been sitting a really long time in the rain. It took a lot of hard pulls at the rope before we got it to turn over, and that was with the plug out, lol. And a bunch of bolts are missing, like somebody scavenging for something else.

That's a bummer about the full time 4x4. Oh well... I'm half way thru scraping all the rust n gunk out of the carb. It definitely looks like a cv carb to me. I have a feeling he will be buying a regular flatslide in the near future. I really doubt a carb this corroded and this complex will work right.

The only thing you can do about the full time 4wd is get a Warn 424 Select. With this you have a **** to pull to put it in and take it out of 4 wheel. Unfortunately these cost about 3 times what the entire quad did.

No, I doubt he will be buying that. Thanks for the ideas though. He needs 4 tires and a battery so far. Maybe a carb too. Who knows what else....
