Hi. I just picked up an older YTM 200. I think its an 82 or 83.

Does anyone know how to confirm what year this thing is - before I start ordering parts?

find the vin number and count to the 10 letter that will tell you what the year is. you can look up what year it is by the letter at any online vin number chart.

I knew there is supposed to be a letter code, but mine only has a 9 diget number stamped in the neck. - 21V012445 - so I'm still lost.

Any other ideas? My last resort will be to head to the dealership and see if anyone there will pay attention to me.

 

I have a Clymer manual for the YTM and it says you can figure out the year by the 1st 3 digits - 21V. And if your model number ranges between 21V-000101 and 21V-100100 you would have a YTM200K. They also list a YTM200L, or a YTM200N. I'm guessing the K would be '83, the L is an '84, and the N is an '85. So you would probably have an '83. I'm not sure what the difference is, but they also made a YTM200EK, a YTM200EL, and a YTM200ERN but these have a different number than yours - maybe they were the Canadian versions? And this book only lists '83-'85 models so that may be the only years they made them. It also says all '85-up models have an automatic cam chain adjuster.

Yeah they didn't know what they were doing back in '83. Then again serial #s probably weren't as important as they are today.
