Default yamaha raptor 80 start problems

I have a 2003 Yamaha Raptor 80 4-stroke. It will not start using the electric start. It will push start and run great but it will no start with the electric start.

Battery is good, fuel good, spark good, compression good any ideas before I spend the $$ to visit my Yahama dealer?

Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 96 Badger (same basic horse) and it's the same. Mine won't turn over with tha battery that it has, but If I jumps start with my trick it starts right up. I think the relay that controls the starter on mine is drawing too much current and slowing the starter speed. I might be wrong, but for the time being I'm not gonna do much but give her a push when needed. Me and the grand kids have fun with it as-is.

I suspect if I replace the relay, clean up the starter, and get a correct new battery (yaeh,... mine was jury rigged when I bought it. Some cheapy toy battery I think) I bet it'll do just fine. It just doesn't seem to turn over fast enough to make it start.

Used to have the Badger 80 and you need to adjust the valves. They tighten up over time and the electrical ignition system can't handle the change. Adjust them back to spec and you will be good to go.

I have already adjusted the valves. Sorry I didn't mention that previously. It starts even easier now than before the adjust...Just not with the electric starter.

The Battery on this machine is pretty odd,..It's just not capable of turning the starter and kicking the relay all at once. i messed up in my previous post. It should have been "but if I jump start it with my truck"...it does start right up with the electrics.

I'm certain it needs some attention and a battery. I'll try battery first, then I'll move to the next steps.... Thanks for the input though Beefy.

Yeah, from what I had read I think your new battery will take care of your issue. I am saying for rivercrew, if he just adjusts his valves they will probably be great. That little Badger we had would tighten up and would not turn over with the electric start.

Which way do I adjust the valves (out or in) and how much. Should both be adjust at the same time. I am new to the 4-stroke world. Realistically should I even try this?

Riverview,

Were you able to solve the problem. I have the exact same problem. New battery, spark plug, had the carb off and cleaned. Won't start unless you push it. Then when warm it starts fine?

Thanks Ken...
