Default Gearing 2001 Raptor 660

I have 2001 660R Raptor and was wondering if I go from the stock 13 tooth to a 12 tooth if it will be close to the gearing on the newer 660 raptors. How much differance will the 12 tooth make.

It seems the Raptor 660s are geared too high, so a popular mod was to go with a 12 tooth front sprocket. It will make a lot of difference, especially in tight trails where you have to ride the clutch now. It will take away from your top speed some, but it will help your acceleration and make it more fun to ride.

The gearing is pretty close except for the taller first gear on the 01 Raptors compared to 02 up 660's. Give it a shot, front sprockets are cheap.

Most 01 Raptor trannies failed because of the weak design. Personally, if I could not confirm that an 02 up updated gearset had been installed I would avoid the quad. A new gearset and labor could actually cost more than the quad is worth at this point.

Yamaha did not do a recall.....01 Raptor owners had to bite the bullet at their expense. Remember that when you are looking to purchase a new Yamaha product.

Anyway, if you have never rode an 01 Raptor and can't tell the difference between the 01 and 02 ratios, and if someone cannot provide proof that the gear swap has occured, I would stay away from it.

Sounds good to me. Thanks for the info. My tranny hasn't failed me yet, hope it stays that way.
