Any advice for a 1987 Big Bear stuck in 4 th gear. Could it be something simple, adjustment, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Question

Here's a bit more info. High and low range works and so does reverse. Is this a bad time of year for asking questions or is it because there could too many causes?

Thanks again anyone.

Default Big Bear

Does it have the semiautomatic transmission like the newer ones? I have an 08 big bear that has the semiauto tranny which has gears 1-5 and then you have to get in nuetral to go to reverse...mine has no high/low though. Is yours shaft drive or belt drive?

Thanks for replying. It is shaft driven. You can go to reverse in any gear by pressing down on the rear brake pedal. As far as semi automatic or automatic, I would assume semi automatic as I have to shift every gear but no clutch lever.

I would try to loosen up the clutch.. on the side of the motor you will see a nuts with a screw in the middle.. loosen up the lock nut and loosen up the screw in the middle.. it might allow you to shift again.. I dunno

Before this started happening--when you shifted into reverse and then back out of reverse did it go back into the gear you were in or did it start back in first gear? I would agree with 6666...adjust the clutch tensioner and see what that does for you...seems to be a more complex than mine...I have no high/low...only five speeds rather than 10...you may look on partshark.com and see if you can find a free service manual for that model...wish I could give you more help I know it is frustrating to have stuff that doesn't work like it is supposed to...Good Luck.

The atv in question is not mine, it belongs to a friend and I'm trying to help him. I also own the same atv, same year. Adjusting (loosening) the clutch sounds like a place to start, I know exactly where you mean. Thanks for your help. I will post back with results.
