Default 04 Kodiak 450 gauge cluster won't stay lit

My gauge on my kodiak recently after a hard day of riding stopped starting. when I turn the key the gauge lights sometimes light up. although when they do if I press the front brake they turn off. Now when the gauge light is lit up I can pull start it just fine, it just seems like it doesn't have the power that it did(almost like driving with the choke on) I know i can figure this out on my own I just was basically hoping for a few tips i have a volt meter and all that to check my batt and cables just not sure if thats going to be the problem. Any help would be great.

Check the brake light switch on the footbrake.
