Default Yamaha 350 Warrior Engine Clatter and power loss

Hello,
I have a 350 Warrior that I got from a friend with a known problem. The engine is making a contant clatter noisy that coencides with the rpm. Recently the engine started to overheat and lost power. I need some advice where to start. Top end or bottom end piston slap. Thanks in advance. john

Well since you have to start to tear the engine down from top to bottom anyway, I would pull the head off first and check the valves and cam operation. If you don't find a problem with that then you can easily pull the cylinder off and check the piston, cylinder walls, and connecting rod bearing. Usually if the connecting rod bearing is bad it will lock up.
