'99 beartracker stator problem. Need advice.
I have a '99 Yamaha Bear Tracker that I think the stator is bad in. It has a spark but the manual says it should jump a 1/4" gap, but it won't jump across a 1/16" gap, much less a quarter. I have tried a new Ignition coil, plug and still the same thing. It has newly rebuilt carb and I know it’s not the issue.
It will not start with the starter, it will only start with the pull rope and idles fine until it warms up. It then starts missing and dies. It won't start again until completely cold. Per the manual I checked the resistance of the stator and found the source coil to be HIGHER than spec. The pick up coil measures OK. I also checked the source coil to ground and it showed to be grounded. Once I removed the stator from the bike the R is still high but no ground condition.
I'm thinking the stator is weak and when it warms up the Resistance is increasing to the point it actually kills the spark. I'm just looking for some confirmation before I shell out the $160 for a new stator.
Also there was a small amount of oil in the stator housing. I think this is normal but needed to ask.
