Default 350 wolverine shifting troubles

I own a 1997 yamaha 350 wolverine. Looking for some advice on what to do about my shifting problem. Upon shifting the shifter lever stays in the up or down position and does not go horizontal like it should. Frustrating cause I can move my foot or reach down and manually put it back and it goes just fine. Would like to know the problem and how to fix. Thanks

That shifter should be spring loaded, sounds like your spring broke or came loose, bad thing is it is internal, so you will have to drain the oil and pop the side cover off on that side and check it out. Get a manual, it will have an exploded view of the engine/transmission, and you will see the shifter spring I am talking about.

clean the crap out of it where it comes out of the case, chain lube, grease, and dirt become super glue after time. if that doesnt work you would need to look into your detent spring, but had this problem many times on dirtbikes and it was just caked with debris at the case, generally if the spring goes it wont stay in gear

Kinda doubt its chain lube, the Wolverine is a shaft drive, so there is no sprocket up front. More than likely it is the detent spring.
