Default 2001 Yamaha Kodiak

Hello Folks,

I have a 2001 Yamaha Kodiak. It will not shift into second gear (it is an automatic) when in High and revving up.

I have checke all electrical connections, fuses, but it will still not shift.

Any suggestions or troubleshooting suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Thank you,

Dedicated Hunter

I thought the Kodiak was a CVT tranny, there is no gears to choose except reverse, hight/Low range forward, park and neutral.

Basically a snowmobile with wheels.

I dont believe it is a cvt, it shifts while you are in high once you reach a certain rpm, its called an Ultramatic v-belt. ???

Ok, it used to automatically "shift" when you hit about 18 mph and I could easily drive 30 mph. Now it just revs out and you can only go about 18mph max.

Take your belt cover off and ride it, and see whats going on with the belt and Primary and secondary clutches.

Okay,

Did that, drove around yard, belt doesn't slip cleaned it up a little bit but everything on that side looks fine, switches fine. Still revs up very high at about 18mph, won't go any faster.
Any other thoughts? Thanks for all the help.

Works like a ten speed bike front and rear chain sprocket. As the rpms go higher the belt should rise up on the front Primary Drive clutch and sink down into the rear scondary clutch.

Like on this video .
it does not it could be a clutch problem. Spring,Buttons, Roller or something.

Here is very good How a CVT clutch system works

The 2001 Yamaha Kodiak has a 4-stroke, liquid cooled engine with single overhead camshaft (SOHC).Its drive train is shaft driven, with push-button on-command changing between two- and four-wheel drive. There's no stick shift involved. Escaping a mud puddle or traversing a hill is as easy as pushing a button to switch to 4 by 4. Once you no longer need it, pushing a button will switch the drive back to 2 by 2.It will be a better option to consult with the technical people of Yamaha company dealing these bikes or a mechanic having experience in handling these types of troubles. It would be fruitful for you consulting them.
