Default Need advice on 1st ATV purchase

Who wants to help a newbie buy his first atv? I am 5 10, 190lbs. I just rode a 2002 yamaha 350raptor and 2001 kawasaki, and a warrior this weekend and am hooked. I research everything and know nothing about atvs. What should i look for new and used? what should i stay away from? I am looking for something that will last a while, good shape, fast and good for trails. Money is not a problem but dont want to spend$ 8000 on a new atv and not ride as much as i want to. Maybe looking for a deal on used with low miles, but dont know what machine is THE ONE to get. also have to budget for a trailer. not looking for a grizzly or 4X4. Thanks for any help as i am very new to this.

Sounds like your riding buddies are all in that 350-400cc sport class, and that is where I would stick it out to most likely. The Z400 or even 400EX make great, capable quads. The Raptor 700 gets honorable mention. It rides a bit high(i.e. doesn't handle quite as well as a 400 stock), but has a plush ride, the low end torque to cruise all day, and the top end hp to rip it up when you get the urge.

thanks for the reply. I went to the dealer today and looked at yamaha 350 and 700 and the yamaha/suzuki salesman recommended the suzuki z400 so i will take a look at those. I just have to determine what good prices are when looking at new and used. He did not have one in stock though but had a used 2006 yamaha yfm700 for $3899.

This is a great site! Well after taking a few days and reading many posts, it seems like alot of people recommend the yamaha z400 and honda 400ex. I plan to keep my eyes open on these ones and also the yamaha 350. Thoughts?

Well I bought a 2003 suzuki z400 for $2000. It runs great and is very clean. also has nerf bars, pro armour underplating, and fat boy 4 exhaust. Thanks for the help. Anyone have this model and year. any advice?

My advice, always wear your helmet/goggles/boots/etc. and don't ride over your head. Go enjoy that machine!
