Default Can I update my 2000 big bear?

Hey all, I've been looking on the Internet at some of the 02 and up big bears, and I was wondering how hard it would be to update my 2000. I'm interested in adding the speedometer/odometer package. There doesn't seem to be much difference in the models so I was wondering how hard it would be to add an 02 speedometer to a 2000. I was also wondering about the selectable 4wd. I already have a warn 424 installed but I would much rather have the factory system. Does anybody have any insight on these issues? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone? I've looked at cheap cycle parts and found what appears to be an add on speedometer kit, but I have to open the engine case up to install the gear, which I had figured on doing anyway. But the kit cost $175 before shipping and I'm not sure it's worth that much to be honest. I mean a stock big bear isn't going to be breaking any land speed records anyway. I just thought the odometer would be nice for keeping up with maintenance and such.

Sounds pricey just for a speedo, The only thing I use a speedo for is the trip meter, its like a poor mans gas gauge.

If you are concerned about keeping track of the maintenance get a hour meter, I paid 20 for mine off ebay.

I added one to my 2000 Kodiak. It wasnt as expensive (figured the part # out, got lucky and found a new OEM add on ebay) and installed myself. Wasnt too bad, a little tedious with all the little parts/gears, but definitely doable. I hate no having an Speedo/Odo on my ATVs.

I might see if I can find one on eBay, I'd just like to have one. Would one for a Kodiak work on my big bear, or are they non interchangeable? Also, Does anybody have any insight on adding the on command selectable four wheel drive?

Good question, doing a quick search the part #s seem close. Im not sure exactly which model you have, but i looked up a BIG BEAR 4WD - YFM400FM and the part # is close to my Kodiak's:
Yamaha ATV Parts 2000 BIG BEAR 4WD - YFM400FM ALTERNATE METER Diagram
Big Bear: 5FU-W0081-00-00
Yamaha ATV Parts 2000 KODIAK 4WD - YFM400FAM ALTERNATE METER Diagram
Kodiak: 5GH-W0081-00-00

Just different prefixes. They do look to be the same but of course im not 100%.
Check out the links for further details.

Not sure what you mean by the on command selectable 4wd. What does yours have? Mine has a selectable red button that enagages the 4wd.

Thanks for the links, ill check them out when I get on my laptop at home where I can see them good. On command four wheel drive is yamaha speak for that little red button. I have a 2000, which is full time four wheel drive. They didn't offer part time until 2002 or 3 I think. Anyway right now I have the warn 424 select, which works ok for what it is but I prefer to have factory engineered and installed options on my vehicles. I was just curious how much of a difference there was in the drive trains between full time and part time four wheel drive.

From what I can see they do not appear to be the same. The Kodiak looks like it has a module of sorts that bolts to the engine case, where as the big bear includes a crankcase gasket, implying that I actually have to install some parts inside the engine itself. At any rate at least then parts are cheaper there than they are at cheap cycle parts. As for my model, the owners manual says YFM400FWNM(C). Not exactly sure what all that means.
