Default 2000 Kodiak 400 4x4 any good?

Hello all, I am shopping for a Utility style quad and came across a 4 x 4 model, and wanted to get opinions on this quad. I have been looking at all the main Japanese brands and ran into a 2000 Yamaha Kodiak 400cc 4x4.
Not a pristine quad but runs good except for the Shifter that shifts it into Neutral or Reverse. For some reason you have to play with the throttle to get it to shift. Other than that issue and cosmetics it seems to be decent.
The ask price is 1900.00 and negotiable due to the shifter issue. Is this something that seems like just an adjustment or a teardown in the transmission?
Or should I run from this and look some more? I also have an opp to get a Moto 4 225cc or the Kodiak?
Based on the opinions on this forum and what the issue is I may be able to negotiate the asking price. I started on a Chinese 200cc ATV and looking to move forward as I am planning some trips.
Thank you for your opinions in advanced!

the ATV runs good and has about 3K miles, The seat cover needs replacing and it needs the 2 side plastics. It also needs front brakes and most likely something is funny with the shifter. It is an automatic. On the Shifter to make it shift smooth you have to play with the throttle. He will go for 1600 with the issues. The front brakes just needs new pads.
I looked at blue book the trade in was 1200 and retail was 1900 so its in between...
Thanks for the reply.
