Default Kodiak 450 4x4 - need direction on new fluids, etc.

Hey all --

My wife and I bought a 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 4x4 Black Carbon this past weekend. I want to go through it and replace all of the fluids, air filter, and spark plug. I have a couple of questions about doing this.

1) Is there anything else that I need to do if I'm already doing all of this?

2) When replacing the oil, do I need to replace washers on the oil plug or anything like in some cars?

3) I want to do the diff oils as well - anything special I need to know about that?

4) Anything else I should know before doing all of this?

Thanks for any replies I get - I look forward to being a part of the community.

Thanks!

-Alli

Check all wheel bearings, track rod ends, A arms and ball joints for play. Check CV boots for splits and brake pads for wear. Make sure the caliper sliders slide. You didn't mention the oil filter, change it. I don't think the 2000 onwards models had this but just in case, some Yams have a large sump drain plug and when you remove it a thimble shaped mesh filter and spring shoot out. The plug is not easy to put back against spring pressure.

He is right about the when the drain plug pops out . Here the order it goes back in.
You just reused the washer.
Front diff just drain and fill until it over flows.

Here is a list of aftermarket Oil filter you can use if the dealer tries to pull one over on you.
So if you want another option these filters will work. The longer 3.5" vs the 2.5" long are a tight fit on the Yamaha but do fit.

These Oil Filters have 20 x 1.5mm threads, 14 psi by-pass valve, anti-drain back valve, 2.3" O.D. gasket 2.5" to 3.5" long.

Wow.. thats great info, thanks a bunch. I'll see what I can get as far as a filter goes. I'm not going to be racing this thing or anything of course, I will be using it at race sites for towing jetskis around the race site, to/from the trailer, etc. Might do some occasional rec rides with it in the mountains if any.. I'm in Central California where it does get fairly warm in the summer. Is there a recommended oil I should look to get that won't be too crazy expensive? Any recommendations on what to use in the diffs?

One possible issue is at the U joint that comes out of the transmission. That side of the U joint looks saturated with oil. Not too wet but its on there and you can see there was a few drips that got onto the pan under it. The other half of the U joint is spotless. You can see where the oil seeped through the dust on the pan/plate under it but wasn't enough to pool or anything. Is that normal at all and is that something that I would need to fix right away? Not sure if thats engine oil or some sort of tranny fluid?

Thanks for all the info and replies, I really appreciate it.

Sorry I forgot to show you the order of the oil drain plug with spring and screen. # 14 and #13.

There is no Tranny Fluid on your ATV the motor oil takes care of that.

Is your leak where the rear axle comes out of the rear diff?

No, it's where the drive shaft comes off the engine to the rear diff. The half of the U joint closest to the engine. The other half of that U joint is spotless.
