Default 96 kodiak tranny please help!

I just picked up a 96-ish kodiak 400 4x4 from my father in law, it runs great but I'm having some issues with the transmission. I've searched online for days and I can't seem to find anyone who has had the same issue. The bike has the foot shifter with the hand lever for R L H, the issue is this, when you shift up from neutral, it makes no change, just like it's still in neutral, then shift up again to 2nd, still no change. But shift up again to 3rd and it's there, now shift back down and 2nd is there, shift down again and 1st is there. What the heck is causing this.. I'm about to tear it apart, any suggestion??

I hate to say it but you will have to take it apart to see what's going on. It could be a lot of things: worn or broken gears bent shift fork something may have come loose. The clutch can be adjusted, there is a adjustment on the side loosen the nut and use a flat blade screwdriver turn it in intill u feel it getting a lil drag on it the back it out a 1/8 of a turn but it will usually slip out of gear if it needs to be adjusted. The other thing to note is you must use oil that is safe for the wet clutch like yamalube or motorcycle oil sometimes people forget and buy the wrong oil and it is bad for the clutch.
