Check the starter gears for missing teeth, but the most likely cause is the one way starter clutch failing. It will be behind the flywheel, which will have to come off to fit a new one.

I've had worn starter clutches slip and grab like this also.

I found some wires broken but it still ran and started so fixed them but still did it took the side cover off and see you have to have some kinda tool to the the fly wheel off but I should only be able to turn it clock wise right? All the gears are fine but I can turn the gears both ways

Then it is the starter clutch, and yes you need a puller for the flywheel.
