Are there any bad choices in the modern 1000cc class?

Dear ATVC: I’m planning to buy a Can-Am Outlander MAX XT-P 1000R work quad, and one thing keeps bothering me. Why not save some money and buy a CFMOTO Gladiator X1000 EPS instead? Is there really such a big difference, especially in terms of quality of workmanship, durability and driving pleasure? I sometimes plan to attach a trailer behind the ATV. I need advice from unbiased people.

Well, we certainly don’t play favorites around here and can assure you that a 1000cc machine from any of the manufacturers today will provide you with loads of work potential, effortless torque and ample speed for that driving pleasure you mention above.

As far as one make model being superior to an other, many of these debates of late come down to very subjective criteria: things like brand loyalty, styling taste, ergonomics that cater to one’s body type over another, on down to factors like proximity to the dealership, opinion of dealer based on past experiences, warranty, parts support etc.

This is why it’s almost impossible for someone to tell you which of any two machines is “better” – Rather, it so often comes down to which is better for you, your needs, your budget, your riding area and so on.

Whether you realize it or not, we live in a era of unprecedented information. Once upon a time all we had to go on in making a big purchase decision like a new ATV was word of mouth recommendations, sales brochure hyperbole and magazine shoot-outs. These days you have the entirety of the internet at your fingertips. Use this to your advantage: Search out YouTube clips by actual owners of the machines you are considering. Visit the forums (like these ones here on ATVC) and ask owners directly how their experience has been with the model you’re considering, if they’ve encountered any issues, would they buy it again if they had the choice.

If any manufacturer out there truly made a lemon and tried pushing it onto the public, you can be sure buyers in this, the digital age, would be very vocal about it. Everyone has a voice today. There is no such thing as going into a purchase decision too informed.
