2002 Kawasaki Prairie® 650 Sport Utility
All-Terrain Vehicle

The Biggest 4×4 Animal on the Market

IRVINE, Calif., — Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., released more information on the rugged new Prairie 650, which blasts into the hotly contested sport utility ATV market with increased engine displacement and more power and torque across the rev range.     Prior to the arrival of the Prairie 650, all models in the sport utility class have been powered by single-cylinder engines. No longer. The Prairie 650 is powered by an all-new, liquid-cooled, 633cc, SOHC, 4-valve V-twin. Pumping out plenty of gutsy torque, it represents Kawasaki’s challenge to the 21st Century sport utility ATV market.     Features include an easy-to-operate CVT automatic transmission with selectable two-wheel/four-wheel drive, a sophisticated double-cradle chassis with two-piston front disc brakes–an ATV first–and a sealed rear braking system, also an ATV first.      “Stunning” is the word that best describes the new Prairie 650 design. The great-looking front grille, with its dual, multi-reflector headlights, is more reminiscent of a modern pickup truck than anything the ATV world has ever seen.     This flagship model sets new standards for performance and design in the fast-growing sport utility ATV market.

Prairie 650 Technical highlights

Engine

  * Newly designed, liquid-cooled, 633cc, SOHC, 4-valve V-twin engine churns out massive torque.

* Offsetting the cylinders by 90° results in perfect primary balance for low vibration levels and comfortable riding.

* Dual CVKR-D32 downdraft carburetors deliver smooth throttle response and efficient fuel consumption.

* Kawasaki Engine Brake Control uses a speed sensor to maximize the engine’s slowing power when descending hills.

 * The Prairie 650 comes equipped with both an electric starter and a recoil starter.

* The air box is located high, and between the cylinders, and uses a snorkel air intake to minimize the ingress of water and dirt.

Transmission

  * Selectable two-wheel/four-wheel drive system allows easy switching to suit changing terrain and applications.

* KAPS (Kawasaki Automatic Power-Drive System) is fully automatic with High and Low ranges for trail riding or heavy operation, and reverse.

* Rider-actuated variable front differential control maximizes power to both front wheels. Lever operation allows rider to adjust the amount of torque to suit conditions.

* An air intake passage located high near the handlebars routes cool, dry air to the KAPS transmission.

Chassis

* Dry weight is 606 pounds–a weight competitive with many current 400cc sport utility ATVs.

* Highly rigid and lightweight aluminum swingarm features a sealed rear braking system using multiple plates sealed in an oil bath–the first ever on an ATV. The monoshock rear suspension features a reservoir-equipped shock for consistent damping characteristics. Designed for infinitely adjustable preload for varying loads and rider weight, it also comes with a dual-rate spring and delivers 7.2 inches of wheel travel.

* Dual-piston front brake calipers are a first for an ATV and deliver powerful, progressive braking.

* The sealed, internal wet rear brake is completely shielded from mud, water and dirt. Its compact design also affords increased ground clearance.

* MacPherson strut front suspension gives seven inches of wheel travel and enhances the wheels’ ground-following ability for a smooth ride.

* High-traction tires are fitted: AT 25 x 8-12 fronts and AT 25 x 10-12 rears.

* The fuel tank is centrally located beneath the rear fenders for a lower center of gravity and includes an in-tank fuel pump.

Other Practical Features

* The engine can be started in any gear if the brake is applied.

 * Convenient front and rear cargo racks can hold 88 pounds up front and 177 pounds on the rear.

 * Redesigned floorboards feature adjustable foot pegs for good grip.

 * 90 watt halogen multi-reflector headlights throw plenty of light for late nights on the job.

 * Multi-purpose, digital instrumentation includes speedometer, odometer, dual tripmeters, clock, hour meter, and fuel gauge.

 * Convenient 12V accessory outlets are provided at the front and rear of the ATV.

 * Space to fit a winch is available inside the front guard. The sturdy frame can handle a 2,000-lb class winch.

* Hunter Green with bronze-colored cargo racks, floorboards, front bumper and wheels.

* Firecracker Red with silver-colored cargo racks, floorboards, front bumper and wheels.
