Sport 400

    In 2003 Arctic Cat enters the high performance sport market with the introduction of a Sport 400 machine. Based on the Suzuki DR-Z400E engine the Sport 400 will be a welcome addition to the Arctic Cat line.    The 398cc 4-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with counter-balancer is a proven design with excellent power over a wide rpm range. The cylinder head features large 36mm intake valves and 29mm exhaust valves, plus a narrow 28 degree valve angle creating a more compact combustion chamber, for improved power. The forged aluminum piston runs in a SCEM-plated aluminum cylinder (no iron sleeve) for improved cooling efficiency. The large Mikuni BSR 36mm carburetor provides quick throttle response and fuel efficiency. The liquid-cooling system with high capacity radiator, combined with the dry-sump lubrication allows for constant low operating temperatures. The 5-speed manual transmission and cable operated clutch also includes a fender mounted shift knob for reverse operation, a highly wanted feature for this class of 4-wheelers. Electric start, with start-in-gear feature, and CDI ignition are powered by compact maintenance free battery.     The chassis includes independent double a-arm front suspension with 8.5 inches of wheel travel. At the rear you will find a linkage-type swingarm , fully adjustable shock, and 9.1 inches of travel. Large 6.9 front disc brakes and single 8.6 inch rear brake both with single piston calipers provide the stopping power. Light weight aluminum wheels with rear radial tires provide excellent traction and handling.    The plastic has not been finalized yet, but at the present, seams to give the quad a stealth bomber type look. Dealer input will be used for the final look. Production of the Sport 400 machines is schedule for later this year. It will make a welcome addition to the Arctic Cat line.
