Ask the Editors: Help Me Land Some Racing Sponsors

Dear ATVC: I’m an amateur racer trying to land a few sponsors to offset the high cost of competing. Do you have any tips to help me put together a good resume’?

As simplistic as it sounds, make sure you have your name, address, phone number and email address clearly listed at the top of the first page. You would be amazed at how many individuals manage to mess this up, leaving support managers unable to contact the prospective applicant.

Clearly list your race results and don’t suppose that not winning (or landing on the podium) automatically disqualifies you from support. A lot of managers are looking for consistency in your racing as well as opportunities for exposure. If you are the type of rider showing up to every event of the season to compete, this could be as valuable to a prospective sponsor as finishing on top.

Be honest and include as much pertinent information as possible. Being caught embellishing your results or downright lying on a resume’ is far more damaging than any mid-pack result would be. Include such information as the date, track, class(es) raced and overall finishes in each class.

Finally don’t be afraid to include a list of who currently supports you (if applicable). Often times proving that you have established lasting relationships with other sponsors will give a manager a solid idea of your professionalism.

Remember that sponsorship can range from a full support ride all the way on down to a pack of stickers or a discount on a product purchase. Don’t think that applying is simply a yes or no affair. Look at any successful sponsorship as an opportunity to get your foot in the door/ establish a lasting relationship with a company who will be genuinely interested in your racing career.
